Jakob Limmer (*1988, Bamberg) studied media art from 2016 to 2020 at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig under Joachim Blank in the class for installation and space. Prior to this, he studied sound design within the MultiMediaArt program at the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences.
Jakob Limmer’s artistic practice investigates how authority and structure shape the body and its behavior, and how resistance and transformation can emerge under these conditions. His works are defined by the interaction of contrasting material worlds: soft, tactile materials encounter rigid, unyielding structures. From this confrontation arise objects that make visible tensions between submission and defiance, control and permeability.
Rather than presenting fixed solutions or closed narratives, Limmer’s sculptures, wall works, and installations capture moments of instability and transition. The works are not conceived as finished forms, but as condensed traces of processes in which the behavior of materials, their resistance, and an openness to chance are as significant as conceptual decisions. They are less representations of the body than propositions for thinking about how structures inscribe themselves into it—and how the body, in turn, can act upon and reshape those structures.
Through a deliberate use of color and subtle irony, Limmer blurs the boundary between playfulness and seriousness, withholding immediate interpretation. His works invite viewers to engage with the interplay of hardness and softness, rule and deviation, and to reflect on their own understanding of authority, resistance, and the scope of possible action.
At its core, his practice explores the concept of agency as a fragile construct that requires constant renegotiation. It opens up a space in which control, routine, and order are disrupted and transformed, prompting a reconsideration of the systems that surround and govern us.
